Stretching Our Campaign to Reach More Children (Oct 18)
Wow! 125%! Thank you for giving us the means to order a great selection of new books for every first grader at Whittier Elementary in Boise. With two weeks remaining in our campaign, we are now aiming for our stretch goal of an additional $1000. When we reach it, we will visit a second Title I school to send another class of early readers home with new books for the Thanksgiving holiday. Rediscovered Books in downtown Boise will donate as many bags as we can find children. Together let's fill them for another school!
Our project is featured here at the Rediscovered Books blog.
Books in Every Home (Oct 14 Campaign Launch)
We are the Boise State University English Literature capstone class, and we are raising funds to put Books in Every Home. In November, we will visit an elementary classroom at a Title I school in Boise to read and distribute the books we purchase with your help.
About Our Project:
As literature students, we share a deep love of reading that goes back to some of our earliest memories. We all have favorite books from our childhood that we can’t wait to share. That’s why we’re raising money to donate some of our favorite books to families in need. Our passion for reading has led us to college and seen us through our education. As one of our final experiences before graduation, this project gives us the valuable opportunity to learn how to raise money, connect with community partners, and distribute books to families in need.
In our experience, books in the home help kids become proficient, passionate readers. Early reading ability is one of the strongest determining factors for educational success. However, for some families, high quality reading materials are hard to acquire. Hindered literacy development is just one of the long list of barriers facing low income youth, but it’s one we can break down.
Thank you to the community that has supported our education and fostered our love of reading. We hope we can return the favor.
Our Nonprofit Partner: Book It Forward!
This semester, we’ll augment our fundraising for new children’s books by volunteering with local charity Book it Forward! to clean used books for redistribution this holiday season. Book it Forward! is a joint initiative between Idaho Voices for Children and The Cabin Literary Center. We share this mission because low income homes have on average one book for every 300 children, while middle and high income homes tend to have 50 books per child. Kids learn to read up until third grade, and after that they read to learn. Reading proficiency at the end of third grade is one of the strongest factors in student success, and it is directly linked to the availability of reading materials in the home. We want every child to have books, so they can all have the greatest chance at success in school.
Our Elementary Class Visit and the Book We Are Making:
Alongside our fundraising efforts, we will also produce our own children’s book using out-of-print children’s literature. Using grant money from Boise State to complement what we earn from our PonyUp campaign, we will commission an art student to illustrate our book and produce multiple copies to be distributed alongside the books we purchase with your donations. To distribute the books, we will make a classroom visit to a Title I school in Boise to read to students and send each one home with as many brand new books as we can. Keep checking our PonyUp website for updates!
Why New Books?
In this campaign, we are raising funds to buy new books, artists' books, and a combination of hardbacks and paperbacks because we remember the feeling we got from our most beautiful and prized books--the brand new paperback in the Scholastic book order at school and the breathtaking hardback stamped in gold foil for Christmas. We love red books, blue books, old books, new books. With this campaign, we want to break down barriers of income so that every child can climb aboard a shiny, hardbound vessel of imagination that takes her breath away.
And . . .
For Tax Season:
All gifts are tax-deductible, as they pass through the Boise State University Foundation on the way to us. Thank you for supporting an Idaho educational institution and the next generation of avid readers!
